Welcome to the Gender and Sexual Diversity Learning Module!
We hope that you will enjoy your journey through the exercises and information presented in this module. Whether this material is familiar to you or new, we hope that you are challenged to think about the assumptions and biases we all carry and how, by being more aware of the subtle messages we have internalized, we can provide better care.
As you make your way through this module, you will be exposed to several content areas and interactive exercises focusing on the following six themes:
1. Why do you need to know about gender and sexual diversity issues?
This section will let you know about some of the expectations and professional standards that relate to the care of people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered/Trans-sexual, Queer and/or Intersex (LGBTTQI). We also include an historical perspective on sexuality and medicine.
The bottom line?
As a future physician, you will be expected to know about, and be sensitive to, the health needs of all people, including those who identify as LGBTTQI.
2. Gender and Sexual Diversity definitions.
What is LGBTTQI ?
Have you ever wanted to now the difference between the words "transgendered" and "trans-sexual" ?
What does "two-spirited" mean ?
What does the rainbow flag actually stand for, anyway ?
If any of these questions have ever crossed your mind, this section is for you!
3. Where do you stand?
This section will will help you to identify your thoughts, feelings and beliefs about gender and sexuality.
4. Practicing without bias.
This section will look at the clinical interview, systemic barriers, medical knowledge and research and provide some suggestions on how to provide culturally competent care.
5. A LGBTTQI health primer.
This section will provide key points on the major health concerns of LGBTTQI adults and youth. Fun quizzes included!
6. Social issues concerning the health of LGBTTQI adults and youth.
This section will highlight some key health-related social issues facing people who identify as LGBTTQI, issues that are often overlooked by health care professionals.
