Gender, Poverty and Health

Gender, Poverty and Health are linked:

• Gender is a determinant of health

• Gender is a determinant of wealth

• Wealth (or lack of it) is a determinant of health

• Health is a determinant of wealth

In this module we use the term poverty to mean the lack or inadequacy of employment, income and social status.

When gender and poverty collide there can be an additive effect on health, for example,  the disproportionate number of women around the world who or poor, or the ways in which poor men are subjected to dangerous physical work demonstrate how gender can increase the risk for poverty and how poverty can increase the effect of gender.

In this module we will explore the complex and inextricable links between gender, poverty and health.
