Self Management (II)

It must be stressed that many items on the self-management itinerary are simple, yet are capable of allowing those with mild to moderate HF to lead near normal lives.

The following are some examples of recommended self management goals:


  • Salt restriction - less than 2 grams of sodium a day.

    • This is difficult as the average American takes in 6g [1]

  • Alcohol restriction

  • Water restriction

  • Quitting smoking

  • Learning to control high blood pressure, cholesterol level and Diabetes

  • Eating a sensible diet that’s low in saturated fats and salt

  • Partaking in exercise programs

  • Reducing stress

  • Limiting caffeine intake
